In a heartwarming recognition of a lifetime dedicated to education and community service, retired Hale School Deputy Headmaster, Mr David Bean, has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM). This distinguished honour, bestowed upon him in the Australia Day Honours list, is a testament to his outstanding service to education and rowing spanning nearly four decades.

David’s impact on Hale School has been immeasurable. His unwavering commitment to academic excellence, literacy, the arts, and Indigenous education has left an indelible mark on the School. Having served as Deputy Headmaster, he played a pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of Hale School, ensuring that high standards and a holistic approach to education were at the forefront.

Beyond the classroom, David’s passion for rowing has been a standout feature of his illustrious career. His contributions to rowing in Western Australia have been exemplary. From his role as the former editor of the Australian Rowing Magazine in the 1980s to his current position as Co-Patron of Rowing WA, David has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to the sport.

In recognition of his exceptional service, the Board of Governors at Hale School recently announced the establishment of a scholarship in David’s name. The David Bean Scholarship, aims to acknowledge and nurture academic excellence. The scholarship offers a minimum of 50% and up to 100% remission of tuition fees, depending on financial capacity. This initiative not only honours David’s legacy but also reflects Hale School’s commitment to fostering educational excellence. The inaugural David Bean scholar will commence at Hale School in 2025.
