Preparing children for the future is a priority in our rapidly evolving world. The Hale Institute of Innovation and Research was established in 2017 to give our students and staff opportunities to experience and develop the latest innovations in learning, to enhance educational excellence.
The Hale Institute partners with research institutions to strategically inform, direct and improve the learning experience for our students. Our partners include Microsoft, International Boys’ Schools Coalition, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, the University of Notre Dame Australia and the University of Western Australia.
The remit for the Hale Institute is extensive and varied. Recent projects include the following:
- Establishing a Virtual Reality (VR) lab for immersive learning experiences.
- Student participation in the AI for Good Challenge utilising design-thinking to create innovative solutions.
- Implementing artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to improve assessment and feedback outcomes.
- Research into the wellbeing benefits from Outdoor Education activities.
- Developing VR content to improve student literacy and spelling competency.
- Offering a drone micro-credential course for students and staff.
- Presenting WA’s first Extended Reality Education Summit.
- Participation in a global research project exploring the benefits of character education.
- Creation of contemporary learning spaces.
- Hosting the Global Goals Challenge enabling students to devise solutions to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
- Offering a STEM Tour to NASA to provide applied learning opportunities for students.

Hale58 Academy
The Hale58 Academy provides students with an opportunity to undertake micro-credentials, short courses or experiences that are recognised, improve employability and the student’s skill set for the future. Courses and skills include:
- Shark Tank eSchool – developing skills of entrepreneurship, collaboration and innovation.
- Peak Program – personal development and improvement in the areas of productivity, focus and results.
- Drone course – CASA certified Remote Pilot Licence (RePL).
- Case Comp – real-world global business case challenge incorporating creativity and entrepreneurial skills.
- AI for Good Challenge – undertaking the design thinking process to create solutions to real world challenges.

Hale School Innovation Scholarship
Each year, Hale staff can apply for a scholarship to research an area of interest in teaching and learning for the benefit of themselves, their colleagues and their students.
Recent examples include research on the comparative effectiveness of different feedback types on student learning, the benefits of music education for Middle School students and the benefits of standing desks on student wellbeing and learning outcomes (in partnership with Curtin University).
