Sundial and Convict Bricks

Sundial and convict bricks

Made by convicts in the 1850s and once located at the High School on George Street, these bricks now provide a fixed support for the Bishop’s Sundial.

The bricks were used in the construction of the school building at George Street which was occupied by the High School from 1882 to 1914 and student boarders until the end of 1926. When the building was demolished, these bricks were taken to Havelock Street with the intention of being used to construct a new section of the school. They were never used but were brought from Havelock Street to the new campus at Wembley Downs in 1961. They now form the structure that supports this sundial.

The sundial was donated to the school by Miss Bunbury, niece of Bishop Hale’s second wife, Sabina Molloy. Miss Bunbury donated the sundial to Hale School in 1962 following its relocation to the Wembley Downs campus.
