UNEARTHED: THE SYD KIRKBY COLLECTION

February 13, 2026

Hale School is proud to announce the acquisition of the Syd Kirkby Collection, a nationally significant archive honouring the life and legacy of Old Haleian Sydney Kirkby AO MBE (1950), one of Australia’s most accomplished Antarctic explorers.

Syd Kirkby’s contribution to exploration, surveying and leadership places him among the greats of Antarctic history. While perhaps not a household name, his work stands alongside figures such as Sir Douglas Mawson and Sir Ernest Shackleton, particularly in his understanding of leadership, resilience and the human spirit. Within the Hale community, his influence is reflected in the phrase ‘Find your frontier’, a sentiment closely associated with Syd and one that continues to inspire generations of Hale students.

Following Syd’s passing last year, his widow, Jude Kirkby, undertook the thoughtful process of finding a home for his extensive personal collection. Despite interest from leading institutions, including the National Library of Australia, Hale School has been entrusted with preserving this remarkable archive for future generations.

The Syd Kirkby Collection offers a rare and detailed insight into the history of Australian Antarctic exploration, cartography and scientific research from the mid-20th century onwards. Among its many highlights are Syd’s personal notes and records relating to the first mapping of the Prince Charles Mountains, a region that had never previously been surveyed or documented. His work in this field remains unparalleled and represents a true example of discovering and defining new frontiers.

Beyond his technical achievements, Syd was also an exceptional leader. As Officer in Charge of the 1980 Mawson Wintering expedition, he led a team that spent up to 18 months in the harsh and isolated conditions of Antarctica. Known affectionately by his team as ‘Godfather’, Syd earned deep respect for the way he supported and cared for those under his leadership.

Hale School is honoured to house and preserve this extraordinary collection. It will serve not only as a tribute to Syd Kirkby’s legacy, but also as a source of inspiration and learning for students, researchers and the wider community.

The School extends its sincere thanks to Jude Kirkby for her generosity and trust in placing this important collection in Hale’s care.
