Board of Governors

The Hale School Board of Governors provides oversight in the operation and strategic direction of the School. The Board works closely with the Headmaster on setting the policy and planning for the long-term benefit of Hale.

Mr Tim Urquhart – Board Chair (2018-26)

Tim Urquhart (1974-78) is an executive and non-executive director with more than 35 years of corporate experience internationally in complex property development and infrastructure. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture (Hons) from UWA and is currently Director of Property Facilities and Development at Curtin University. He is also the Deputy Chair of Amana Living aged care and a Director of the John Curtin Gallery Advisory Board. Tim’s son is a recent Hale graduate.

Most Rev Kay Goldsworthy, AO (2018 – ongoing)

Archbishop Kay Goldsworthy serves on the Board as a visitor in her capacity as Archbishop of Perth. She was ordained Deaconess in 1984 and Deacon in 1986. She worked in Melbourne parishes before being appointed Chaplain to Perth College in 1988. Kay then served as Archdeacon of Fremantle, Archdeacon of Perth, Assistant Bishop and then elected as the diocesan bishop of the Diocese of Gippsland. In the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours list, Archbishop Kay was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). Elected as the 8th Archbishop of Perth and Metropolitan, Kay was installed as the first female archbishop in the Anglican Church of Australia in February 2018.

Mr David Benson (2024-28)

David Benson (1992-97) holds a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne and Bachelors of Laws and Science from the University of Western Australia. He is a partner of Clayton Utz and specialises in dispute resolution, intellectual property and data privacy. He is a member of the boards of Everability (incorporating Guide Dogs WA and Tasmania) and the Clayton Utz Foundation. David’s son is a current Hale student.

Ms Miriam Borthwick (2023-27)

Miriam is an experienced journalist, strategic communications and media relations professional. Following a career in the ABC as a politics reporter on TV news and The 7.30 Report, she has worked in both government and corporate sectors while also consulting in media issues management, crisis communications, media and presentations training.

She currently serves as a Board member and Deputy Chair of Healthway WA, a Board member of disability service provider Rocky Bay, and a Board member of Rowing WA’s ‘Making Waves’ program for disadvantaged teens. Miriam sits on several committees including Healthway’s Finance Risk and Audit Committee, Women in Media committee and the Hale School Foundation Board. 

Mrs Sue Daubney (2016-26)

Sue Daubney is the Managing Director of Bannister Downs Dairy in Northcliffe. In 2006, she was awarded the Telstra Business Women’s Innovation Award for WA and was winner of the First Amongst Equals at the WA Business News 40 Under 40 for 2010. Sue has been a Deputy Chair of the South West Development Commission and sat on various Boards and Committees. Sue has a Bachelor of Science (Biological), Bachelor of Nursing and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education and has presented on behalf of Australia at the G20 Agricultural Summit (2016) in China. Sue is the parent of two boys, who are past and current Hale boarding students.

Mr John Garland (Deputy Chair, 2015-25)

John Garland (1972-76) holds an MBA in International Business and Finance, and degrees in Real Estate Management. With over 30 years’ experience in the property industry he specialises in the commercial and investment sector. His rural background also has him heavily involved in regional WA. John served as a member and then President of the Old Haleians’ Association from 2002 to 2015, and is the father of a Young Haleian.

 

Mr Simon Kelsall (2020-24)

Simon Kelsall (1986-90) graduated from the Muresk Institute of Curtin University with an Associate Diploma in Agriculture. Since graduating, Simon and his family have run a mixed farming enterprise in Boddington, including cropping and merino sheep. Simon is the father of two past Hale boarding students.

Mrs Sally Langer (2022-26)

Sally was the founding Partner for search firm Derwent Executive and currently sits on the boards of Northern Star Resources, Sandfire Resources, The Gold Corporation and MMA offshore. She has an active interest in corporate culture, diversity, and environmental, social and governance issues. Sally is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a Bachelor of Commerce. She is the mother of a current Hale student. 

Rev Richard Pengelley (2014-27)

Rev Richard Pengelly is a former dual Olympian, World Championships player and captain of the Australian water polo team. He holds a Bachelor of Physical Education, a Graduate Diploma in Education and a Bachelor of Divinity. His career began as a Physical Education teacher and then Chaplain of Hale School. He later became Chaplain of St George’s College, UWA and the WA Institute of Sport; Rector of St Nicolas’ Carine-Duncraig; Assistant Chaplain and Director of Service Learning at Christ Church Grammar School; Associate Professor of Sports Science at UWA (now an Adjunct Lecturer); Chair of True Blue Dreaming and Special Olympics WA; Dean of St George’s Cathedral and currently Chaplain of St Mary’s Anglican Girls School. 

Mr Grant Robson (2023-25)

Grant Robson (1981-85) returns back to the Board of Governors having been a Board member from 2014-16. Grant is a commerce graduate of the University of Western Australia and a Chartered Accountant. He joined Macquarie in 1999 to establish the Business Banking division in Perth. After a long career leading Macquarie’s Business Banking team in Perth, in 2016, Grant relocated to Melbourne and commenced a new role as Head of Client Relationships for Business Banking. He has since returned to Perth and leads Distribution nationally for Macquarie’s Business Bank. Grant is an Old Haleian and his son is a recent Hale graduate.

Mr Justin Williams (2023-27)

Justin Williams (1977-88) has held various executive roles in finance and IT at Bunnings and is currently its Chief Financial Officer. He has also held a senior role at Target, another retailer in the Wesfarmers stable. Justin is a graduate from the University of Western Australia with a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance. He is a Hale School Foundation Board member, the father of a Young Haleian and has a son still at Hale.
