Hale takes first volleyball title

The Brother Carrigg Shield for volleyball, first introduced in 2000, has never been on our campus. In the 19 years of the competition, Aquinas has tasted success 15 times. After coming second in the 2018 season, our volleyball team was hoping to go one better.

The season played out as expected with both Hale and Aquinas accounting for all other opponents with relative ease. The trophy would come down to the two Hale-Aquinas matches. The first took place in the Hale gym in Term 4 and it was a classic. Hale took a two-set lead before Aquinas stormed back to win in five sets. It was a heartbreaking loss for Hale but not one that broke them. The Hale boys continued to tick all the boxes in Term 1 before getting another shot at Aquinas in the final round of the season. This match was played in front of a full gym at Aquinas with supporters from both schools ensuring an electric atmosphere. Much like the first encounter, Hale took the first two sets before Aquinas fought back to take the third. Hale was not going to be denied this time and the boys held their nerve to claim the fourth set and, as a result, a share of the Brother Carrigg Shield for the first time.

The successful team was presented with the trophy and premiership medallions at Assembly with Colours being awarded to Oscar Love, Tom Love and Adam Horton. Korben Phillips was also announced as the second Haleian to be awarded Honours for volleyball.
