Hi, I’m Dougall Ethell.
I’m a Priest of the Anglican Church of Australia and have been Chaplain at Hale School since 2006.
Hale School exists because of the Christian vision and energy of Bishop Hale who sought to serve the needs of the fledgling city of Perth and the State of Western Australia. For over 150 years many people have contributed to support that primary initiative of providing a Christian Education from an Anglican perspective.
My work as Chaplain has meant advocating, supporting and developing that Christian core of service within the school and the Hale community. It’s about “keeping the rumour of God” alive.
This has enabled me to interact with boys and their families and meet people at many different stages of their personal journey and in their association with Hale. It is more than enough work for one person, and Sally Howe, Assistant to the Chaplain, is also directly involved in the Chaplaincy at Hale in the Junior School.
Each link below is intended to help you understand better the Christian Ministry here at Hale School and provide an opportunity for you to contribute to this core activity of the School.
For further information, I can be contacted during normal business hours on (08) 9347 0139 or via email on dge@hale.wa.edu.au.

You may like to visit this page if you are thinking of having your son or daughter baptised. Baptisms are arranged to take place at the monthly Family Service or at a time that is suitable to both you and the school. The Chapel is not available to the general public for Baptisms.
You might be thinking that it is time for you or your son to be confirmed. Hale holds an Annual Confirmation Service where one of the Bishops of the Perth Diocese visits the school to conduct the Confirmation of the candidates. You might like to visit this page if you or your son are thinking that it is time for this important “rite of religious passage” to take place in your son’s life.
Perhaps you have visited this page because you are interested in a Wedding in the Chapel of St Mark? The Chapel is a lovely place for a wedding, but it is not available to the general public or on Sundays. Old Boys of the school and the daughters of Old Boys are eligible. They will be aware that the services conducted in the chapel are in accord with the usage of the Rites of the Anglican Church of Australia so that only a Christian wedding service is offered.
You may wish to support the Christian ministry of the school. The boys are involved in regular Chapel services throughout the term. Is there anything in the School calendar to keep the wider Hale community in touch with their faith? Find out how you can be involved here.
Maybe it’s a while since you read the Bible you were given when you were at school! If you are interested in Bible Study and Growth in Faith you might like to try here.
If you have come to this page looking for living as a Christian or direction then the following links and contact details may help.
