Hale School Nulsen Haven Youth Patrons hosted a lunch today for 7 Nulsen Haven residents and their care givers.
Nulsen Haven is a not-for-profit organisation providing a variety of community centers, services to the general community and people with disabilities, acquired brain injuries and their families. Services include supported accommodation, community development, therapy, creative development, alternatives to employment and respite.
Year 11 students Kevin Bush, James Payne, Michael Salmon and Scott Wilson are the four Nulsen Haven Association Youth Patrons for 2009. Four Year 11 students are chosen from numerous applicants to become Nulsen Haven Youth Patrons for a year; another seven students have been chosen to become Youth Patron Committee Members.
One of the aims of the program is to provide opportunities for Patrons to educate fellow students at their school. The program also encourages young adults to take an active role in improving the quality of life for people with disabilities.
The Hale School Youth Patrons thoroughly enjoyed lunch with the residents followed by taking them on a brief tour of their school where they introduced them to fellow students, all the while creating awareness about disability issues and promoting positive messages about living with a disability. The boys all commented on how easy it was to communicate with their guests and topics of food and football were easily discussed. From their comments it was obvious the Hale boys benefitted immensely from this program. Kevin Bush (Year 11) said, “This was an awesome lunch and now I can’t wait until they visit again on Sports day.”
Nulsen residents are looking forward to attending sports days, art cup days and music events at Hale later in the year.
