Hale Students Take TEE Honours

The School was ranked top WA boys' school based on the percentage of students who achieved an average scaled mark in the top third of average scaled marks and fifth on the percentage of students studying four or more TEE subjects scoring a scaled mark of more than 75 per cent in at least one subject.

An impressive cohort of 65 boys - of the 175 students who gained a Tertiary Entrance Ranking (TER) - achieved 95 or more, with 15 earning a ranking over 99.

Five Hale boys were among the top-scoring 40 students awarded General Exhibitions based on their average of five TEE scaled marks.  The recipients were 2007 School Dux Bharath Iyer (5th in the state), Ben Hogan (7th), Shovan Rath (15th), Ray Pritchard (18th) and Edward Wang (34th). Subject Exhibitions (for students achieving the top raw exam mark in a subject) were awarded to three students: Bharath Iyer (Calculus), Ben Hogan (French) and Nicholas Scott (Geography).

Bharath Iyer earned Certificates of Distinction (for top 0.5 per cent of candidates sitting the examination) in Applicable Mathematics, Calculus, Chemistry and English. Certificates of Distinction were also awarded to: Ben Hogan (French, Ancient History and Music), Timothy Montgomery (French), Nathaniel Smith (English), Darryn Sherry (Discrete Mathematics), James Lewin (Geography), Sean Hayes (Geography), Raymond Pritchard (Chemistry and Geography), Nicholas Scott (Geography and History) and Callum Twigger (History).

Notably, Ben Hogan and Timothy Montgomery came first and second respectively in the state in French, continuing Hale’s fine record in the subject. Hale students – Beazley Medal winner Chris Mofflin and Michael Li - also took out the two top placings in French last year.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) student Matthew Bancroft received a Westscheme Award for his outstanding performance over the year and of the 25 Wholly School Assessed students, 11 (44 per cent) gained an A grade in at least one subject.

Twelve boys gained Certificates of Excellence for achieving 10 or more A-grades over Years 11 and 12. They were: Matthew Dulaney, Trent Grgich, Ben Hogan, Bharath Iyer, Brendan O’Connor, Lihan Oliver, Wesley Pendlebury, Raymond Pritchard, Shovan Rath, Charles Skender, Ern Tan Hsern and Edward Wang.

As in previous years, Hale was a leading school in many subject areas, based on the percentage of students achieving a scaled mark of 75 or more in that subject or course.  Hale excelled in the subject areas of Accounting, Ancient History, Art, Calculus, Chemistry, Biology, Discrete Mathematics, French, Geography, History and Japanese.

Deputy Headmaster David Bean said the results had been consistent with the very strong performance of recent years – in 2006 six Hale students were awarded General Exhibitions, including the Beazley Medal for top student in the state.  Particularly pleasing this year, he noted, had been the School’s outstanding performance in humanities subjects and the large number of boys - 100 - scoring a TEE of 90 or more.

"Certainly, the School sees the humanities as part of the essential foundation for a liberal education and for strength in literacy which underpins success in all subjects," he said.

“The results are a tribute to Hale’s culture of good learning and fine teaching; to the hard work of students and their highly experienced teachers, together with fantastic support from parents."
