The terrible weather did not deter the Year 8 students, and it certainly did not deter guest marathon runner, Daryl Howe, (Daz) who ran the entire school day to help raise money for WA charity, Ride Aid.
What makes Daz so special is that he has Cerebral Palsy, "I am the only person in the world with my level of cerebral palsy to run marathons," says Daz. He was told he would never walk but, having confounded the experts; his aim is to run the Perth City to Surf Marathon in 2009 and the Boston Marathon in 2010!
Daz ran an amazing 81 laps of Hale’s Craig Oval covering a total of approximately 33kms! We were also fortunate enough to have Old Haleian, David Wright, from the Claremont Football Club, come and give encouragement to Daz and the Year 8 cohort. Even with his injured hip flexor, David felt compelled to run a few laps with everyone.
Well done to Mrs Jill Maskiell, Mr Harry Weston and all the Year 8 PCL leaders for encouraging their boys throughout the day, many tired boys just back from camp the night before! Current amount raised is in excess of $9000 -final amount not in yet due to students on camp.
Several boys ran over 30 laps, cheering Daz on every time they passed him.
